Infertility and the Resounding Silence

Infertility has been define as the inability to conceive as a couple after regular unprotected sex or the inability to biologically contribute to the art/ science of conception. The World Health Organisation statistics says that about 15% of women worldwide suffer from infertility but i want to believe they are more than that.

In Africa and particularly Nigeria where i come from, nobody really likes to speak about it. Individuals who go through infertility only come to speak about it when they have overcome the challenges of infertility. The subject of adoption, fertility treatment, Artificial Reproductive technology are all done hush hush. it is considered a shame for 2 people to get married and overtime not have kid.Friends, extended relations, family and neighbors who have no business in your struggles butt in. Most times they have no good advice or contributions to offer. They just keep tabs with questions like ' You belle still flat', 'you still dey do sisi', 'Time dey go' . You smile or wave them off , go home, cry and sometimes ask God questions. A lot of bottled up emotions and these goes for both male or female.

Now here is the good part, are you a couple going through infertility? or  are you finding it difficult conceiving? The first thing you need to know is you do not need to keep quiet about it. You do not need to fold your your hands and do nothing. Get up! You are not alone. Take a step, visit the hospital and get yourselves checked; do your research online and offline; Smile ; Learn to love your partner over and over again; do not give up and remember there are always options. Hey, these options do not include antagonism, domestic violence, divorce etc.

On a final note, God is the author of fruitfulness and he would come through for us all. Do not loose hope and faith put together.

Have a good Weekend!!!
